What is the ASTM E136 Noncombustible Concept and Standard


ASTM E136 is a standard test method for assessing the combustibility of building materials. It determines explicitly whether materials are considered non-combustible. Materials tested under ASTM E136 are exposed to high temperatures to evaluate whether they ignite, burn, or release flammable gases.


For a material to qualify as noncombustible under ASTM E136, it must meet the following criteria during testing:

- It should not ignite or show signs of sustained flaming when exposed to a high temperature (approximately 750°C or 1380°F).

- It should not release significant heat that could contribute to fire growth.

- The material's surface and interior temperature must not exceed a certain threshold.


Many construction materials, especially those for fire-resistant applications, aim to meet or exceed ASTM E136 standards. Examples include magnesium oxide (MgO) boards, often tested and marketed as noncombustible under ASTM E136 due to their fire-resistant properties.
